Here's how photovoltaic systems work.
Sun light is made up of photon particles, when they strike the Silicon PV wafer they move electrons in the substrate that creates
electron current flow and thus we have power. Modern PV panels have a conversion rate of around 12.5% this is way up from a
few years ago when we were getting only a conversion ratio of around 5%. This increased efficiency and new mass production
techniques has made it cost justifiable to now produce your own power and net meter credit it back to the grid for use later
when the sun isn't shining.
